Our Process

Letterpress. There's no other printing technique quite like it.

We have Johannes Gutenberg to thank for inventing the printing process that dominated the industry from the mid fifteenth century until the mid 1950s, when new technology gave way to more efficient ways to produce printed works.

Many of Big Sal's contemporaries found their way to the scrap heap, their cast iron melted down to make room for offset and later digital printing presses.

Alas, the beauty of letterpress has been given a second day in the sun. Today, Letterpress Jess is among the craftsmen who utilize a mix of vintage wood type, lead type, wood blocks and magnesium cuts alongside modern photopolymer plates to take our designs from the computer to the printed product.

Each and every single product we create is printed on one of our vintage presses, fed one at a time, by hand, into the press.

Because our process is truly handcrafted, you should expect slight variations in each piece. And the deep, gorgeous impressions we press into our thick cotton stocks and other fine papers can leave bruising on the backside of the invitations. These variations will mark each of your luxury letterpress invitations as truly one-of-a-kind and utterly handmade.
